Désertification, pénurie d'eau et hausse du niveau des mers liés au réchauffement climatique risquent de donner lieu à des conflits d'un type nouveau, préviennent les experts à la veille du premier débat sur le sujet au Conseil de sécurité de l'Onu.
"Le réchauffement climatique accroît le risque de conflit. La conséquence la plus imminente est certainement la désertification et la dégradation des sols", affirme ainsi Janos Bogardi, directeur de l'Institut universitaire pour l'Environnement et la Sécurité humaine, instance onusienne dont le siège se trouve à Bonn.

La Grande-Bretagne et la Chine se sont affrontées mardi soir au Conseil de sécurité des Nations unies, qui débattait pour la première fois de son histoire du réchauffement climatique.
La délégation chinoise a estimé que l'organisme international n'avait aucune compétence pour discuter du changement climatique; la secrétaire britannique au Foreign Office, Margaret Beckett, qui présidait la séance, a souligné elle que ce phénomène était susceptible de conduire à des guerres, et qu'il était donc légitime que le Conseil de sécurité s'en empare.
"Notre responsabilité, au sein de ce conseil, est de maintenir la paix et la sécurité internationales, et cela inclut la prévention des conflits", a-t-elle dit.

To Plant a tree
1. Dig a hole at least twice the width of the root ball to allow the roots to spread out. Remove the tree from its container, carefully cut off broken roots, and slightly loosen the root ball.
2. Place the tree in the planting hole. Always lift the tree by the root ball and never by the trunk. Spread periphery roots outwards. Avoid planting the tree too deep. Make sure that the soil line of the young tree is higher than the surface of the surrounding hole.
3. Shovel some soil into the planting hole. Check the planting depth and adjust if needed. Confirm that the tree is straight. Fill the hole gently but firmly. Pat the soil around the base of the root ball.
4. It is not recommended to apply fertilizer at the time of planting. Water the seedling thoroughly with a slow stream of water to settle the soil. Do not stake the tree. The sooner the tree can stand alone, the sooner it will become strong.
5. Provide follow up care. Protect the tree from pests and diseases by removing plants nearby which are likely to affect it. Remove weeds as they will compete with tree roots for moisture and nutrients. Protect the tree from destruction by livestock.
6. If suitable, space trees well to avoid competition for air and soil nutrients, and to encourage the growth of branches. Watch out for drought conditions and provide water if needed, especially during the first few months. Watch out for yellowing of leaves. Always maintain good air circulation in the tree by pruning to avoid pests and other diseases.

In a huge victory in the fight against global warming the Supreme Court today issued a ruling in the case of Massachusetts v. EPA decisively rejecting the Bush administration's inaction on global warming. In a 5-4 vote, the High Court sided with the Sierra Club, 12 states, 3 cities, and the other petitioners in the case by agreeing that carbon dioxide and other global warming pollutants can be regulated under the Clean Air Act (CAA). Additionally, in a separate 5-4 ruling, the Justices wrote that the EPA cannot refuse to regulate these pollutants for political reasons. The Court gave its overwhelming stamp of approval to states that are taking action to fight global warming. At a time when automakers are suing states for taking this step forward, the Supreme Court stated clearly that states have the right to protect their citizens and the environment. It also provides momentum for efforts in Congress to reduce vehicle emissions.
